Causes of Acne
In acne, dead skin cells and sebum clog the follicular canal and produce a comedo (koh-me-doh, plural = comedones). Causes of Acne vary because everyone is different. In most cases you do not get acne from eating chocolate or greasy foods. If you want to prove this to yourself keep a food diary to work out if you are one of the few people whose acne gets worse if they eat certain things. People get acne to varying degrees. If you can get rid of your acne with over the counter medicine that is great. If you have more severe acne you should consult a dermatologist. Mild Acne
First up are product and treatment options for those of you with mild acne vulgaris. With literally THOUSANDS of acne treatment options it can be a bit confusing trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. Generally, mild acne is treated with topical products, including topical retinoids, antimicrobials (benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, or erythromycin), salicylic acid or azelaic acid. Benzoyl peroxide lotion or gel are the most effective acne treatment you can get without a prescription. Products with benzoyl peroxide (say: ben-zoil peh-rok-side) or salicylic (say: sal-uh-sil-ick) acid in them are usually pretty helpful for treating acne. Benzoyl peroxide blasts your pores with oxygen, killing acne-causing bacteria and clearing your pores of cellular debris.
